About This Role

NORESCO has an immediate need for a Microgrid Subject Matter Expert (SME) to develop, analyze and model microgrid solutions for NORESCO’s municipal, higher education, industrial, commercial, and Federal customers. The Microgrid SME will support our project development teams with a focus on integration of on-site renewables and fossil fuel generation assets, incorporation of battery energy storage systems (BESS), and the intelligent software and hardware controls required to operate the microgrid.  This position will report to the Associate Vice President of Engineering and Analysis.


Key Responsibilities

  • Represent NORESCO as the subject matter expert on microgrid technologies, value propositions, incentives and market offerings applicable to NORESCO’s and Carrier’s clients.
  • Develop analysis tools/scorecards that will enable project development teams to perform go-no-go technology assessments quickly and accurately. Tools will reflect revenue and savings benefits, utility rates and project cost based on technology and project location.
  • Establish and maintain microgrid technology databases including equipment pricing, technical specifications, production data, data for utility rates and applicable incentives, and local project costing.
  • Support account executives, sales managers, and proposal managers in developing microgrid-related marketing material.
  • Support project teams by attending customer meetings, presentations, and selection interviews regarding microgrid systems and BESS technology.
  • Identify potential equipment providers and establish and maintain relationships.
  • Develop and negotiate purchasing and delivery agreements with equipment providers in coordination with NORESCO’s Construction group.
  • Keep abreast of market developments including new technologies, providers and market opportunities.
  • Identify potential partners for project implementation and establish and maintain partner relationships with NORESCO’s Delivery group.
  • Make recommendations for technology manufacturer/model standardization.
  • Work with NORESCO Design group to develop standardized scopes of work and specifications.
  • Work with NORESCO Analysis Engineers to develop energy savings and energy production models and detailed microgrid/BESS economic proforma templates.
  • Work with NORESCO Delivery group to support construction of the project and deliver post installation services including commissioning, measurement and verification, and operations and maintenance.
  • Work with NORESCO’s Structured Finance team to develop deal templates for Long Term Service Agreements, Power Purchase Agreements and other financial models.
  • Meet regularly with internal NORESCO and Carrier groups to stay current on Carrier initiatives and product offerings incorporating microgrid/BESS technologies.  Groups include but are not limited to AdvanTEC, Carrier ASHRAE Fellows, and NORESCO Strategic Alliances.
  • Meet regularly and collaborate with other NORESCO Subject Matter Experts.
  • Attend applicable microgrid/BESS industry professional group functions and stay current on emerging technology trends.
  • Provide regular lunch and learn sessions on emerging microgrid/BESS technologies and the current state of the microgrid/BESS industry.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience developing Microgrid Projects
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer’s registration (or path to obtain one)
  • Highly skilled at technical writing.
  • Ability to create and manage custom energy simulation models for microgrid/BESS systems.
  • High level communication, leadership, engineering, and project management skills.
  • Strong sense of ownership, understands the importance of maintaining project schedules, resolving issues in a timely manner, and in consistently meeting deadlines and commitments.
  • Graduate degree in engineering or business administration
  • Desire to build and maintain respectful and inclusive working relationships with individual project team members to foster an environment of cooperation and productivity.
  • Robust combination of business acumen, risk management, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Experience with engineering for federal facilities.
  • Eligible to obtain federal security clearance.
  • Solid experience with customer interaction and excellent communication with customers and end users
  • Experience going out to project sites.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting a project throughout the lifecycle, from conception through development, design, implementation and commissioning.
