Principal Engineer, Chemistry and Sorbents

Carrier is the leading global provider of healthy, safe and sustainable building and cold chain solutions with a world-class, diverse workforce with business segments covering HVAC, refrigeration, and fire and security. We make modern life possible by delivering safer, smarter and more sustainable services that make a difference to people and our planet while revolutionizing industry trends. This is why we come to work every day. Join us and we can make a difference together.

About this role

Carrier is looking for engineers and researchers who are passionate about and experienced in creating a sustainable future through implementation of novel materials in HVAC, energy and building systems.  This individual would have responsibility for novel material development in support of Carrier’s plan to develop the next generation of sustainable building solutions. Their focus would be on sorbents (e.g. metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs)) and similar functional, porous materials that enable water, CO2 and other air-borne contaminants. They would be responsible for identifying, determining key performance criteria, characterizing and evaluating materials and sub-systems to these criteria and assisting a larger team with implementation into Carrier’s products.

This role would be part of an international network of materials experts focused on supporting Carrier’s global business. It will involve working with new suppliers and industries, as well as universities and consortiums to assist in identifying new research and materials for consideration.  Coordination of activities across disciplines within Carrier will also be necessary to ensure the proper application of materials and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive innovative materials and component development with detailed evaluations, analysis, reporting and communication.

  • Communicate to management and internal customers on plans, risks and results, through both written and verbal channels.

  • Review journals, patents and publicly available data to synthesize technical feasibility and risks, as well as propose strategies for novel materials in HVAC, building and energy applications.

  • Balance significant workload (support multiple projects, lead several projects).  Propose priorities and readily shift activities to maximize impact.

  • Develop research-level techniques into industrially appropriate applications for metal or plastic surfaces of interest and characterize the durability in realistic exposures.

  • Develop new methodologies, equipment and capabilities to characterize and qualify materials and components, along with associated standard work.

  • Clearly articulate value of work conducted; proactively mitigate schedule risks and implement improvements.

  • Assist in the development of the materials and wider Carrier team, especially as it relates to novel materials, recommending new trainings, conferences and publications.

  • Maintain a safe working environment, following all procedures and PPE requirements.

  • Must be self-driven and capable of driving development projects autonomously, while gathering feedback from appropriate experts and stakeholders.

  • Must maintain an acceptable attendance, performance and discipline record.

Required Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Material Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in research and development or academic role

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6-12+ years of experience in research and development or academic role in materials science or chemistry/chemical engineering related to sorbents, hygroscopic, metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) and similar surface chemistry or functional materials.

  • Experience in working with universities, consortia, external labs and/or start-ups, coordinating feasibility studies and evaluations through statements of work or joint development agreements.

  • Expertise with materials and chemistry lab equipment, including microscopy, calorimetry, gravimetric and other analytical chemical and materials techniques for functional material characterization.

  • Familiarity with electromechanical systems including heat exchangers, compressors, motors and structural elements or similar systems preferred.

  • Expertise in basic software operation (Microsoft office) required.  Familiarity with specialty software for analysis, tracking and simulation (Minitab, JMP, Comsol, Labview, Ansys/Nastran FEA, etc) would be a significant benefit.
