About the Role:
The Controls COE is focused on delivering innovative and robust designs for equipment and system control. We serve the entire Carrier product portfolio, offering a unique opportunity to engage with multiple business units across the company. We support the design, development, test, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the controls within the system, offering the controls engineer experience in everything from conceptual design to lab testing and field trial support. We are seeking a talented, highly motivated, and results-driven engineer with expertise in control systems specification, design, architecture, programming, and verification. The Staff Controls Engineer will work with global, cross-disciplinary teams to design and qualify control solutions for a full range of HVAC and refrigeration systems – with a strong emphasis on model-based design methods. This role can be worked onsite in Syracuse NY, Indianapolis IN, or Atlanta GA.
Key Role Responsibilities:
- Lead small teams of globally-distributed engineers to develop production-ready controls solutions ensuring customer and technical requirements are satisfied, and standard procedures are followed
- Support project management with the definition of suitable plans for development and verification, conduct stakeholder technical reviews.
- Perform dynamic analysis of non-linear systems in development of control algorithms including system identification, controllability, robustness, stability, and optimization
- Work with system engineers to develop requirements, and subsequently ensure controls requirements are satisfied and verified
- Drive decisions on control architecture solutions including allocation of controls functions both within and across physical modules (e.g. PLC, UI modules, connectivity/IoT modules)
- Recommend updates to equipment design efforts based on control objectives versus system performance capability
- Support the development and calibration of physics-based plant models
- Develop & execute unit-tests & integration tests for control system
- Perform hands-on testing in psychrometric laboratory and analyze results to direct refinements to plant model fidelity and control algorithms
- Apply best-in-class strategies to push testing further upstream in the development lifecycle (MIL/SIL/HIL)
- Support strategic initiatives to improve organizational quality and efficiency through technology advancement and process improvement
- Define organizational best-practices and chair design reviews to ensure minimum standards are met throughout organization
Basic Qualifications:
- B.S. in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering with 7+ years of controls system experience
OR
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering with 5+ years of controls system experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient knowledge of controls engineering foundations, including feedback control, linear/nonlinear control, multivariable control, system identification, and optimization
- Proficient in the use of Matlab-based toolsets to design, implement, and test embedded controls algorithms
- Proven ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Proven ability to lead small cross-disciplinary teams of engineers to deliver medium-to-large scope projects
- Excellent communication skills and a proven track record of delivering results through effective teamwork
- Ability to work hands-on in psychrometric laboratory environment to collect and analyze data
- Experience with industrial control applications
- Familiar with PLC or AUTOSAR styled embedded architecture
- Experience with vapor-compression cycles, including heat exchangers and turbomachinery compression technologies
- Expertise in heat transfer, two-phase flow, and thermodynamic cycle analytical skills
- Experience with software development lifecycle best practices, including version control, change management, release management
- Experience in requirements management and system integration, specifically test strategies across model-in-the-loop (MIL), software-in-the-loop (SIL), and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) domains
- Strong technical writing skills with ability to produce clear, concise documentation
- Understanding of embedded SW architectures
- Experience in developing and calibrating physics-based models
- Familiar with system optimization techniques and their application to modeling and system design
- Knowledge of acauasal modeling languages such as Modelica

Pay Range:
