About this role:
Det-Tronics is an industry leader in Industrial Fire and Gas Detection business, and has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Product Design Quality Engineer to apply and expand their skills in support of the development of Det-Tronic’s existing and growing portfolio of fire, gas and smoke detection products.
These detection products utilize a variety of proprietary sensing technologies from optical to electro-chemical that must be certified to a wide range of industry standards and country-specific regulations. Customers around the world rely on these connected products to keep people and property safe in challenging hazardous environments found in applications from traditional POG (Petrochemical, Oil and Gas) markets to the latest Renewable & Clean Energy ones. The principal product design assurance engineer performs the role of the Robust Design Lead (RDL), ensures product design quality and robustness, ensures there are no design escapes to production and represents design engineering for sustaining activities related to product quality improvement. They work cross-functionally and build strong working relationships with employees at all levels and functions across the business including quality, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, customer service and product management
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead cross-functional product quality and safety investigations. Hands-on contribute to analyses and investigation testing.
- Collaborate with PMO and Engineering team to ensure effective and efficient implementation of PDP (product development process) with focus on Electrical and Firmware deliveries completion. Participate in technical reviews and ensure implementation of coding and design standards/best practices.
- Review electrical and software documentation to ensure technical accuracy, compliance, or completeness to mitigate risks.
- Develop or specify standards, methods, or procedures to determine product quality or release readiness.
- Work cross-functionally and build strong working relationships with employees at all levels and functions across the business including quality, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, customer service and product management.
- Ensure that product development teams are meeting quality and safety standards of product design.
- Lead DFMEA process particularly for Firmware and guide / coach engineering team to create FMEA for new design and updating existing designs.
- Lead engineering excellence initiatives to drive improvement and standardization of processes that help product development teams deliver robust products.
- Provide training and support development teams in applying Design Quality management using SPC standards, methods, tools, and concepts.
- Develop, implement, and improve Engineering metrics related to process certification and design robustness (including Engineering Effectiveness metrics and standard work).
- Participate in design reviews, change management process, and ensure design robustness before handing over design to production.
- Participate in the development, maintenance and interpretation of policies and standard work for engineering and coordinate their implementation.
- Support and contribute to product requirements development on projects and support the engineering team on the Electrical and Firmware requirements review process.
- Support and contribute to defining design of experiments for new technology development.
- Collaborate with operations and production quality team and represent design engineering for product quality improvement initiatives.
- Proactively promote continuous improvement to improve product quality.
- Contribute to Carrier Quality and EH&S goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- 7+ years of Product development or manufacturing experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in software or electrical engineering.
- Advanced engineering degree.
- Experience in industrial, automotive or fire equipment industries.
- Excellent presentation skills to effectively communicate to different stakeholders complex topics such as investigation and test results verbally and in written form.
- Expert skill level with Excel, statistical analysis software such as Minitab, and other engineering analysis tools.
- Training experience with audiences of different sizes, of skill levels and from business functions.
- Root cause analysis experience.
- Experience with collecting, reviewing and synthesizing data and test report writing.
- Experience with product development processes (e.g. phase gate structured).
- Experience with quality tools & methods (e.g. Six Sigma, 5S, Kaizen).
- Experience with Design or Process FMEA’s.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail, while also able to manage multiple projects & priorities.
- Familiar with ISO9001, engineering standards, automotive quality standards and similar quality systems and processes.
