About this role:
Det-Tronics is an industry leading division of Carrier’s global Industrial Fire and Safety business, and has an exciting opportunity for an Approvals Engineer in the Engineering Approvals & Test team to support their existing and growing portfolio of fire, gas and smoke detection products. These detection products utilize a variety of proprietary sensing technologies from optical to chemical that must be certified to a wide range of industry standards and country-specific regulations. Customers around the world rely on these connected products to keep people and property safe in challenging hazardous environments found in applications from traditional POG (Petrochemical, Oil and Gas) markets to the latest Renewable & Clean Energy ones. This Sr. Compliance Engineer position offers a rewarding career in Carrier to lead test & approvals of safety products for these diverse markets and applications.
About this role:
The Approvals Test Engineer that manages approvals projects by interfacing with various agencies to obtain product certification to safety and performance standards. The Approvals Test Engineer is part of the Det-Tronics Engineering Approvals Team and assists with the ongoing work required to obtain and maintain product compliance with the required industry regulations. This role will perform detailed product analysis and hands-on product testing to verify compliance, and will then interface with regulatory agencies to create and prepare the submission materials to acquire certification. They will also act as a consultant to other assist other working groups teams on by serving as a consultant on compliance concerns matters, such as (i.e., advising with the design team on sustaining and new product development projects NPD, answering customer questions regarding approvals-related questions from the provided by sales, product management and field-support teams, after-market and field teams, etc.)
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret applicable safety and/or performance standards and apply the requirements to the products.
- Participate in product development teams to ensure that global hazardous location and performance requirements are considered.
- Understand product requirements and develop certification strategies to meet those requirements.
- Create test plans, and oversee and interpret the test results in compliance with company and industry standards and policies.
- Prepare technical justifications and technical documents to demonstrate compliance to applicable standards.
- Interface directly with third-party certification agencies, and manage projects with them.
- Write and execute test protocols in accordance with approval standards and procedures, record results and write test reports.
- Maintain existing certifications, and support preparations for audits and participate in audits.
- Previous experience in the design and certification of products used in hazardous locations, including performance certifications, is desirable.
- Prioritize and manage work requests in an organized and timely manner.
Required Qualifications:
- Associate Degree
- 3+ years of experience in testing products
- 1+ year in approvals/compliance engineering.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (Electrical Engineering Highly preferred).
- Experience with sustaining and new product development projects, and strong working knowledge of product development processes particularly verification and validation testing.
- Must be able to understand requirements in safety and performance standards and apply that knowledge in the evaluation of a product via technical analysis and/or testing.
- Must be able to follow department operating procedures and have an open attitude for continuous improvement.
- Must have solid excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to clearly present data and articulate test results to agencies and other internal working groups.
- Must have good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions safely, and work within established company guidelines.
- Previous experience in the design and certification of products used in hazardous locations, including performance certifications, is desirable.
- Experience with hazardous location and/or performance standards (FM, CSA, ATEX, IECEx) is desired.
